Witch-, Trolls- and Monster Fingers

A frightfully fun cookie recipe that delights kids and makes adults grin

Every year for my son’s birthday, we make these magical fingers. What started as a Halloween classic has turned into a cherished tradition. They look spooky (in a fun way) and taste absolutely delicious. There’s just something irresistible about cookies that look like witch fingers with bloody nails or green monster claws – and the kids love helping out in the kitchen.

The dough is divided into three parts, each with its own flavor and color: classic vanilla, chocolate, and green almond. Everyone can join in – even the little ones can help shape the fingers and press on the almonds as spooky nails.

This recipe makes about two baking trays and is perfect for Halloween, kids’ birthdays – or just a rainy day in need of some extra fun.

Ingredients

  • 7 dl All-purpose flour

  • 1 dl Sugar

  • 2 tbsp Vanilla sugar

  • 2 tbsp Syrup

  • 2 pc Egg

  • 200 gram Softened butter

  • Unsweetened cocoa powder

  • Green paste food coloring

  • 1-2 tsp Almond extract

  • Raspberry jam

  • Blanched almonds

Instructions

  • Boil the almonds briefly and remove the skins. If you like, toss them in a bit of cocoa powder for a dirtier, more realistic “nail look.”
  • Mix the flour, sugar, vanilla sugar, syrup, egg, and softened butter well until you have a smooth, even dough.
  • Divide the dough into three parts
    Leave the first part plain.
Add cocoa powder to the second portion.
Color the third portion green and add almond extract for flavor.
  • Place the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up.
It makes the dough easier to handle and shape.
  • Pinch off small amounts of dough and roll them into small logs. Gently press your thumb at one end to create a spot for the nail.
  • Spoon a little jam into the indentation and press a blanched almond on top to create a creepy-looking nail.
Use a knife or toothpick to create small creases so the dough looks like real fingers – about 6 lines per finger.
  • Bake at 350°F (fan oven) for about 10–12 minutes. Keep an eye on them, as baking time may vary depending on the size.
